Insurance?

The car we rented was excellent but they tried to get us to take a 200 euro insurance policy on top of the £260 rental plus an extra £40 which we thought was insurance. we didn't pay the extra 200 euro but were threatened that if any accident occurred whether we were to blame or not then we would be liable. whilst this didn't ruin our holiday it was at the back of our mind constantly.
