Castelfranco Veneto is a town and comune in the province of Treviso, in the region of Veneto, in northern Italy. Located about 30 kilometres (19 mi) from Venice, it is the birthplace of the painter Giorgione. It is situated on a small plain between the Monti Grappa and the Piave river.
Castelfranco Veneto is known for its annual Palio della Quintana, a medieval-style horse race that takes place in the city's main square. The race, which dates back to the 16th century, is held on the first Sunday of October. The race is run between four teams, each representing one of the four quarters of the city. The Palio is accompanied by a parade of flag-throwers, musicians, and costumed riders.
The city is also home to the Castelfranco Veneto Cathedral, which was built in the 12th century. The cathedral is noted for its Romanesque-Gothic architecture and its frescoes, which were painted by Giorgione in 1510. The cathedral is also home to the tomb of Giorgione, which was built in 1511.
The city also has a number of other attractions, including the Castelfranco Veneto Castle, which was built in the 13th century. The castle is home to a museum, which displays a collection of artifacts from the town's history. The city is also home to the Teatro Accademico, a theatre which hosts performances of music, theatre, and dance.
Castelfranco Veneto is well connected to the rest of Italy by train, bus, and car. The nearest airport is the Treviso Airport, which is located about 25 kilometres (16 mi) from the city. The city can also be reached by car from the nearby cities of Venice, Padua, and Verona.
