Birkenhead is a town located in the Metropolitan Borough of Wirral in Merseyside, England. It is situated on the Wirral Peninsula, on the west bank of the River Mersey, opposite the city of Liverpool. Birkenhead is a major settlement within the Liverpool City Region, and is part of the wider Merseyside conurbation.

Birkenhead is served by two railway stations, Birkenhead Central and Birkenhead North. Both stations are on the Wirral Line of the Merseyrail network, with regular services to Liverpool, Chester and Ellesmere Port. There is also a ferry service from Birkenhead to Liverpool, operated by Mersey Ferries. The ferry service operates from the Pier Head in Liverpool to Woodside in Birkenhead.

Birkenhead is easily accessible by road, with the M53 motorway running through the town. The M53 connects Birkenhead to the M56 motorway, giving access to Manchester, Chester and North Wales. The A41 road runs through Birkenhead, connecting the town to the M56 and the M6 motorway. There are also regular bus services from Birkenhead to Liverpool, Chester and other towns in the Wirral.
