Rochdale is a town in Greater Manchester, England, at the foothills of the South Pennines on the River Roch, 8.9 miles (14.3 km) north-northwest of Oldham and 9.8 miles (15.8 km) northeast of Manchester. Historically part of Lancashire, it had a population of 109,772 in 2011. It is one of the larger towns in the Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale, which had a population of 211,699 in 2011.

Rochdale is the largest settlement and administrative centre of the Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale. The town is surrounded by several smaller towns and villages that together form the Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale, such as Middleton, Heywood, Milnrow, Whitworth and Littleborough.
