Wakefield is a city in West Yorkshire, England, on the River Calder and the eastern edge of the Pennines, which had a population of 99,251 at the 2011 census. The Battle of Wakefield took place in the Wars of the Roses and it was a Royalist stronghold in the Civil War. Wakefield became an important market town and centre for wool, exploiting its position on the navigable River Calder to become an inland port.

The city is served by Wakefield Westgate railway station and Wakefield Kirkgate railway station. Wakefield is served by the M1 motorway, linking it with London, Leeds and Sheffield. The A1/M1 link road passes close to the city centre. The city is also served by several bus services, including the Transdev-operated Wakefield FreeCityBus, which runs every 10 minutes through the city centre and surrounding areas.

Wakefield is home to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, a 40-acre open-air gallery founded in 1977. The park is one of Europe's leading open-air galleries and is home to works by Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth and Anthony Caro. Other attractions in the city include the Wakefield Museum, the Hepworth Wakefield, the National Coal Mining Museum, the Wakefield Theatre Royal and the Wakefield Cathedral.
