It is the home of the Hanford Site, a decommissioned nuclear production complex that operated from the 1940s until the late 1980s. The site is now a Superfund cleanup site, and is managed by the U.S. Department of Energy. Hanford is located approximately 35 miles south of Fresno, and about 80 miles north of Bakersfield.
