As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough's population was 18,061, reflecting a decline of 49 (−0.3%) from the 18,110 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 320 (+1.8%) from the 17,790 counted in the 1990 Census.

The borough of Rutherford is located at the center of the Hackensack Meadowlands. It is bounded by the Passaic River and Lyndhurst, North Arlington, and East Rutherford to the east, the Hackensack River and Carlstadt to the south, and the Hackensack River, Wood-Ridge, and Wallington to the west. Rutherford has easy access to major highways such as Route 3, Route 17, and the New Jersey Turnpike, as well as public transportation such as the NJ Transit train and bus lines.

The borough of Rutherford is served by NJ Transit at the Rutherford station, located at Park Avenue and Highland Cross. The station offers service on the Main and Bergen County Lines, and is a transfer point for the Montclair-Boonton Line. New Jersey Transit buses also serve the borough, with routes 76, 83, and 156 providing service to and from Newark, Jersey City, and Hackensack.

Rutherford is also served by the Meadowlands Rail Line, a light rail system that connects the borough with the Meadowlands Sports Complex and other points in the Meadowlands. The rail line is operated by New Jersey Transit, and is free for visitors to the sports complex.

For those traveling by car, Rutherford is located close to the New Jersey Turnpike, Route 3, and Route 17. The borough is also accessible via the Lincoln Tunnel, which connects it to Manhattan, and the George Washington Bridge, which connects it to the Bronx.
